Water, human activity and elephant personalities determine their movement patterns
We just published a paper on movement behavior of forest elephants in Gabon using the largest assembled dataset of GPS locations to date! Forest elephant movement depends on water availability, level of human activity, and elephant personality. Elephants span a range of behavior from 'idler' to 'explorer', but there is much individual variation in how they move. See a popular article on our paper in The Conversation. Also, see another write-up from the NSOE communications team.
