Community Wildlife Project

Environmental education activities, with the help of village parabiologists, increase village awareness about a range of topics from ecosystem services to sustainability.

Environmental Education

Conservation
Citizen science is at the very core of our environmental education activities, since village parabiologists serve as the bridge between the classroom and their community. Parabiologists participate in monthly educational workshops that focus on a different environmental theme each month, after which they share with their village the key concepts from the lesson and engage their community in an interactive activity.

The first themes focused on building a solid foundation of basic ecological concepts such as the ecosystem concept and ecosystem services. Once these concepts are grasped, we will build on them with more complex topics such as biodiversity, conservation and protected areas, and human impacts and sustainability. The workshops incorporate interactive activities to reinforce ideas and make each theme engaging and relevant to their day to day lives.

An example lesson is here.

Science
This project aims to not only increase environmental awareness, but also build local capacity for conservation through citizen science. We have incorporated a number of activities on basic concepts and skills in data collection, graphing, and basic statistics to give the parabiologists tools to further investigate the wildlife monitoring data they collect.
